"Kathy, I have your jacket!" I found this jacket at auction on www.ebay.com in 2006 and thought it would be nice to keep it
in the UH family, so to speak. The front of the jacket has KATHY embroidered on it, and the back
has some amazing embriodery artwork and "AGE RANGER".

Memories at Upper Heyford-1950-51
Sent: 12/26/08
Duane,
My name is Bernard (Ben) Gorda. On 7 June 1950, I and four other airmen
from the 7503rd Base Complement Squadron, deployed from RAF Marham, were the
first air policemen to arrive at Upper Heyford. In fact we had performed
"leap frog" escort for the military convoy from Marham that began the USAF
staffing of RAF Brize-Norton, RAF Fairford, RAF Greenham Common and RAF Upper
Heyford. Another Corporal and I, were assigned by the Provost Marshal at
Brize to visit the Oxford City Police and arrange for the accomodation of the
future USAF town patrols. Later, at Heyford, I worked for a Lt. John T.
Holman and performed duties as NCOIC Pass & ID, NCOIC Town Patrol (Bicester
& Banbury) (we should have had combat pay - coping with the off-duty army
engineers) and as Sgt.of the Guard. Other airmen at Heyford at the time were
Cpl Stinson, Cpl Pelfry and Pfc Gene Bartels, my Best Man when I married in
February 1951 to Beryl Dorrington of Kidlington; we celebrate our 58th
anniversary this February. We have three children and three grandchildren.
Before Marham, I had been at Burtonwood (Nov 1948 - Jan 1950). Subsequently,
I served in the UK at Manston (1954-57) Brize (1959-62) and Lakenheath
(1965-68,) and retired in 1969. Later, I served as The Director of Public
Safety at Georgetown University; The Chief Of Police af Crofton, Maryland;
Director of the National Neighborhood Watch Program for The National Sheriffs
Association; Research Associate for the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies; and The Director of Police & Security for The Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts. Hopefully, this will trigger some memories and perhaps
additional contributions.
Good Luck to you.
Ben
Duane:
I’ve attached a photo of a leather patch that belonged to my father, Col.
Paul G. Underwood, when we were stationed in England in the early 50’s. I
was born in Colchester during our duty assignment. I have many photos from
that time period of the planes and crews. If interested, email me back and
perhaps I can send you a CD with the photos.

France until May 1959, not May 1958 as stated on your web site pages. When
I arrived at Laon in Sept. 1958 their were two squadronso f RF-84's, 302nd
& 303rd. They remained there until 3rd qtr of 1959.
I was there the day, a Sunday, first flights arrived from Shaw AFB, SC and replaced the RF-84's.
I was assigned to 66 TRW, Base Communications Sqdn, from Sept. 1958 til Oct. 1961.

Duane,
I've included pictures of a SP T-shirt, that I believe was done in
1979. If I remember correctly, I believe Brian Lambert (A-flight) was behind
the making of the shirt. I thought you might enjoy seeing it, as a former SP.

My name is Steve Lewis and I am writing from my home in Bicester, Oxfordshire, which is quite near to the former RAF site at Upper Heyford.
My sister's first husband was a serviceman at the base – Sergeant Frank Endaya – who was in Ammo. She met him in 1988 and they married in March 1989 and then emigrated to live on the Eglin base in Florida from June 1989.
I am attaching some photos of a very special piece of memorabilia. I believe that these jackets were customised for the various “teams” that worked the base and, as the pictures show, they were also personalised for the owner. I also understand that they were only ordered once or twice each year (presumably when new people arrived), which meant that although they were fairly common around the base in those days, they were also something of a limited edition.
I was very lucky in that my future brother-in-law ordered Ammo jackets for him, my sister and also for me in May 1989. I have always treasured my jacket because it was so unusual and it frequently became a talking point when I was out and about. I remember one evening, shortly after Frank and my sister had emigrated, that I was in a pub in Kidlington (where I lived then) and that there was a small group of Americans standing at the bar. They saw my jacket when I went up to buy some drinks and began a pleasant and enjoyable conversation with me because they were serving at the base: they were also in Ammo and had known my brother-in-law.
Considering that my jacket is almost 20 years old – and that it was worn almost on a daily basis, up until about 10 years ago – I have kept it in very good order. I got it out to wear this last week, when my girlfriend and I went on one of the site tours that the North Oxford Consortium organise these days in conjunction with a man named Peter Clifton.
I thought you might like the photos to add to the web site. I wonder how many people remember them? Whether anyone else who looks into the site ever had one, and also how many jackets are still out there somewhere?
I have found the web site to be an enjoyable read. Thanks for reading my e-mail and good luck with any projects you might have lined up for the future.
Best wishes
Steve Lewis

General Dynamics F-111 in Irak
The General Dynamics F-111 is a medium-range strategic bomber,
reconnaissance, and tactical strike aircraft designed in the 1960s. The United
States Air Force (USAF) variants were officially named Aardvark, their
longtime nickname, at their ceremony of retirement from service in 1996. The
only remaining operator of the F-111 is the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF),
and in Australian service the F-111 is known as the Pig.

The Connecticut Museum that was supposed to receive this aircraft ceased operations several
years ago. We heard about this aircraft sitting in a yard three years ago. The aircraft was
made available to us last year. After raising the funds to cover the back rent and
transportation fees we moved the aircraft here.
Our goal is to return her back to the scheme she wore at Upper Heyford.
We are still in need of raising $3,000 to finish purchasing paint and sheet
metal items to repair many of the panels that were destroyed during the
demilitarization of the aircraft. Please visit our website at
www.OV-10Bronco.Net
to learn how your tax-deductible donations can help.
It is very ironic to us that our of 533 'Varks that were built in Fort Worth
there is not one on display anywhere in the DFW metroplex.
It seems fitting to us to return "Balls 009" to her original UH Paint Scheme
and have her on display in her hometown.
We greatly appreciate your efforts to allow us to post our progress on your
website.
Cheers!

Folks,
As many of you already know the OV-10 Bronco Association and Veterans Memorial Air Park
have been aggressively working for the last four years to Save-An-F-111 (F-111E Serial Number
68-009) from the Scrap Man's torch. Yesterday we completed Phase 2 of our plan and brought
this Cold War Vet home to its birth place in Fort Worth, Texas. Our efforts landed us a front
page article in the Living Section of the Fort Worth Star Telegram (See Below).
In June we will start our engineering and reassembly effort.
We are by no means out of the
woods yet. We are still needing to raise $3,000.00 to purchase supplies and structural items
to return this Veteran back to her Cold War appearance. We are accepting charitable donations
in any amount. They can be sent to the below listed address:

FORT WORTH -- Arriving in pieces on two flatbed tractor-trailers, it did not
look like much of a museum piece.
But the homecoming of an F-111 Aardvark, built in Fort Worth a generation ago
at General Dynamics, now Lockheed Martin, was cause for celebration at the
Veterans Memorial Air Park.
"There is no example of the F-111 in the Metroplex," said Jim Hodgson,
president of the OV-10 Bronco Association, which has spearheaded the creation
of the air park. "This airplane to a lot of the retired guys from the plant is
the most important project they worked on."
The F-111, an E model delivered to the Air Force in 1969, is nicknamed
"Balls 9," from its manufacturing number of 68-0009. The Aardvark was a
controversial, and costly, airplane in the 1960s and eventually became known
as "McNamara's folly," a nod to the defense secretary at the time.
BY THE NUMBERS Here's some more to know about the F-111's return to Fort Worth:
566 - The number of F-111s produced at the General Dynamics plant in
Fort Worth. It was retired by the Air Force in 1996.
2 - The number of F-111s on display in Texas. One is in Tyler at
the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum. The other is at Sheppard Air Force Base
in Wichita Falls.
5,430 - The number of flight hours "Balls 9" recorded, all of them
with the 77th Tactical Fighter Squadron based in England. Some of those flights
were over Kuwait and Iraq during the first Persian Gulf War.
$12,000 - The amount of money it took to bring the plane to Fort
Worth. The OV-10 Bronco Association raised half the money from F-111 supporters,
and the other half came from the B-36 Peacemaker Museum group.
$3,000 - The amount needed to restore the plane. "There is a lot of
talent with the retirees from the B-36 group, and when they get done, I
guarantee you that you will not be able to tell the difference," said Jim
Bloomberg, a leader in the OV-10 group.
13 - The air park now has a "baker's dozen" aircraft next door to
its hangar at Meacham Airport, including an F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, OV-10
Bronco and A-4 Skyhawk. The organization parked a TF-102 Delta Dagger, produced
in Fort Worth in 1958, at the site just a week ago.

I hope that you are well.
Planing application has at last been submitted. If any old Heyfordians would
like to lend a hand, any letters(s) from the US might get the Council to sit up
and realise the importance of this site. Letters to Cherwell District Council
Planning Department Bodicote House Banbury OX15 4AA UK should be headed
'Redevelopment of former RAF Upper Heyford' and refer to the recent application
submitted on 28 September but awaiting registration (and reference no.) or email
to jenny.barker@cherwell-dc.gov.uk. I would clearly like to see interested parties
support the retention of all the military infrastructure; runways, buildings and
fence and also the principle that the enabling funds (i.e. from the houses being
allowed for that express purpose) should be concentrated on the heritage project
which could have global significance (we have plans to link this with other sites
on both sides of the 'iron curtain)'. Any personal touches would be important
to individualise and show the level of interest in keeping a site of this
importance for this and future generations to learn about the Cold War and the
role of NATO etc. We would be grateful if you could give this application as
much publicity as possible.
Thanks

For anyone that couldn't make it to the event but would still like a DVD,
I can be contacted below. The DVD runs to 45 minutes. In addition to
the day of the event we spent another day filming around the base to get a
snapshot of the buildings as they are today, these pictures are also included
on the DVD. So far I have received very favourable comments from those that
have watched it. It sells for £10 GBP.
If I can clarify anything, please do not hesitate to conatct me.

Also a pic of an F-15 at the airshow of 1985 I

"Quite some years ago while I was in the RNoAF I was given this patch by
"someone" visiting the COB (Collocated Operating Base) facility at Bardufoss
AFB in Norway. This must have been appx 1988-1990. I think the COB was
"controlled" by 48th TFW personnell, but we had visitors from other units as
well, including from Mildenhall and Upper Heyford.
I don't know if it has any relevance to your extremely nice web-site for
patches, but I attach an image of this patch anyway.
Your website is just about the only one I find describing the 100 RSG, so
here we go..."

From the desk of Will Ward comes a short story that I think you'll enjoy. Written in MS Word.
"I am not an ex-serviceman by any means, but I thought you might be interested in the
attached short piece I wrote on my impressions of Upper Heyford as a young boy.
Best wishes

Bowling Alley Fire and Demolition
May 2003
"I thought that you might like to know that there was a fire at the Upper Heyford
Bowling Center earlier this week which damaged the roof of the building. The fire department
are investigating the cause but I believe at this stage they don't think that it was
intentional."

"I live in what was the old base houseing on Portal Drive North. I
thought you may like to know that the old bowling alley was knocked down
this week and signs erected where the old huts are, warning of "Asbestos"."

"I have lived next to the base all my life and have seen a lot going
on 1958 to 2004 quite a while. Thought you might like to see what has
happened to the boiling alley within the last two weeks."

Special Thanks
I wish to express my sincere thanks to Donald Steier for upgrading
my PC at no cost to help me maintain the RAF Upper Heyford
Memorial Web Site!
Special UH Thanks also go to Tom Conklin, a 15 year USAF veteran
stationed at RAF Upper Heyford with the 20th OMS, Transit Alert (Red
Section and Blue Section) from 1969 to 1973. Tom put me in touch with his neighbor,
Donald Steier, who helped me with the problems I was having with my PC. Don graciously
upgraded my PC at no charge! Now, with faster PC performance and plenty of
hard drive space to load software programs, I will be able to continue
maintenance and improvements to the RAF Upper Heyford Memorial Web Site.
This upgraded PC was essential to the web site's continued growth and
expansion, as we have now exceeded our 100 meg web space allocation milestone.
Please drop Don a special UH Thank You for his kind and generous gift! Don is the
real deal and I've seen his work. He is the leading edge among those in his field.
Thanks again to Tom and Don, for all your help to get us back on track!
