|
"Prior to the 1960's there were three squadrons: 3918th MV Sq.,
3918th Food Service Sq., and 3918th Supply Sq. Then they
mergered into one squadron called: the 3918th Air Base Squadron.
Around 1962, they split up again into about four squadrons.

"Happy Memories"
by John Moniz, A/1C, 3918th Food Service Sqd., Nov 1951 - Nov 1954.
Three years at Upper Heyford were some of the best years of
years of my life. Nov 51 to Nov 54 .
We arrived in England at Southampton on the General
Stuart, it was real cold in 51. When we got to Upper
Heyford our barracks were small white cement houses with
pot bellied stoves for heat, each day someone was assigned
to that stove to make sure it didn't go out, that was the
only heat we had at that time, also to take a shower you
had to go across the street in another building, boy was it
cold! We finally got to move in a nice brick building across
from the mess hall and there we stayed until we went back to
the States. We worked in the same mess hall, Army and Air
Force together at first until they got their own mess hall,
they were great guys. Always remember Cpl Noxs U.S. Army.
I spent most of my time in Northampton when on leave, I
wonder if anyone remembers these places, The Black Boy, The
Bull, The Cross Keys, The Plough, The Ram, and also the
restaurant in the center of town "The Casino". We use to
have eggs & chips, that was our meeting place when we got
in town. The Brits were really nice people, they took us
in their homes and made us welcome. I also married a
Northampton girl.
I remember taking the Double Decker Bus
from Heyford to Northampton and the bus company was called
"Smith's Speedway Service" 30 miles to town, the ride back
to base was time to catch up on sleep. I also spent time
in Oxford, Brackley, Towcester Banbury, Lower Heyford and
London, those were the good old days. Many Airmen came over
T.D.Y. 90 days, we use to call them 90 day wonders. I also
spent three years with my cousin Richard J Roderick who was
also in food Service Sqd. I have been back to England four
times since leaving the service, things have really changed
but I will always have those memories of Upper Heyford and
the 3918th Food Service Sqd. Anyone out there who was at
Upper Heyford from 51 to 54, feel free to e-mail me, I would
really like to hear from you. I forgot to mention that the
ship we came back to the States on was General Rose. Cheerio
for now, all best mates.
