Memories at Upper Heyford-1950-51
Sent: 12/26/08
Duane,
My name is Bernard (Ben) Gorda. On 7 June 1950, I and four other airmen
from the 7503rd Base Complement Squadron, deployed from RAF Marham, were the
first air policemen to arrive at Upper Heyford. In fact we had performed
"leap frog" escort for the military convoy from Marham that began the USAF
staffing of RAF Brize-Norton, RAF Fairford, RAF Greenham Common and RAF Upper
Heyford. Another Corporal and I, were assigned by the Provost Marshal at
Brize to visit the Oxford City Police and arrange for the accomodation of the
future USAF town patrols. Later, at Heyford, I worked for a Lt. John T.
Holman and performed duties as NCOIC Pass & ID, NCOIC Town Patrol (Bicester
& Banbury) (we should have had combat pay - coping with the off-duty army
engineers) and as Sgt.of the Guard. Other airmen at Heyford at the time were
Cpl Stinson, Cpl Pelfry and Pfc Gene Bartels, my Best Man when I married in
February 1951 to Beryl Dorrington of Kidlington; we celebrate our 58th
anniversary this February. We have three children and three grandchildren.
Before Marham, I had been at Burtonwood (Nov 1948 - Jan 1950). Subsequently,
I served in the UK at Manston (1954-57) Brize (1959-62) and Lakenheath
(1965-68,) and retired in 1969. Later, I served as The Director of Public
Safety at Georgetown University; The Chief Of Police af Crofton, Maryland;
Director of the National Neighborhood Watch Program for The National Sheriffs
Association; Research Associate for the Commission on Accreditation for Law
Enforcement Agencies; and The Director of Police & Security for The Virginia
Museum of Fine Arts. Hopefully, this will trigger some memories and perhaps
additional contributions.
Good Luck to you.
Ben

"This is the patch for Det 1, 6985 Security Squadron. We supported the RC-135 operations by Det 1,
98SW from June 1967 to August 1970 when we moved to RAF Mildenhall. The patch is very obscure, as only
about 30 or so were made. We were a small detachment flying with the SAC RC-135s during that time".
Submitted by Terry McNaught, SMSgt (Ret) June 1967 to August 1970.
|
"Building 358 was once the
Det2, 40th ARRW Alert Facility but later became the
Security Police Armory and Central Security Control dispatch. An extension
was added to the facility so we wouldn't have to stand in the pouring rain
to check our weapons into and out of the armory. The surrounding roads were
also paved with concrete, and 8-10 striped parking spaces were added on
the north side."

"...taken of me in 1964 or 1965. Not hard to see what I
was doing. Maybe someone will recognize the aircraft or me. If
this picture comes thru to you ok, you will see that the paint
was flaking off, and I don't remember for sure where this was
on the flightline."
Guy A. "Tony" Smith, A2C, 3918th CDS, Jun 1964 - Jun 1966.

"I found this one taken at UH on 14 May 1965. This was taken after all the aircraft had left
UH and we were no longer part of SAC. We were part of USAFE ,7514th Combat Support Squadron. I left UH
and the Air Force in June 1966."

"My first badge I was issused when I enlisted. I
don't know how many more are around but it said Air Police
instead of Security Police. I may not have it long; my son
is in the 82 Air Born at Fort Bragg and I was thinking of
giving it to him before he depolys to the land of sand for
good luck."

"Of special interest to some is the infamous "Chow Bus". The Chow Bus
provided a means of transporting hot meals to Security Personnel in various remote
Security posts on the Flightline, and was (to me) a welcomed site on cold and
rainy midnight shifts. This assignment was often a thankless job, but always
appreciated!

"... my mural is a sarcastic "Mad magazine" type dig at SP
Investigations. This was before political correctness, as our CSP at the
time loved it. This character is of no one in particular and any
resemblance is a coincidence. (I would often do these types of
caricature drawings of our squadron personnel on British cricket bats and
then have people in their unit sign it and we'd give it to them as a
going away present. Once the others found out, I got "tasked" by other
squadrons to do this. I even was tasked to do one for the SrNCO Security
Police/3rd Air Force and the CSP of all USAFE cops when he came to a
dining out at Heyford. When I first got stationed at RAFUH, I use to
draw caricature drawings of the "back office" SrNCO's on the guard mount
room chalkboard during the midnight shift. When they came to work in SP
Admin in the morning, after I was off duty, I heard they got a kick out
of it, but since I was new they never did figure out who the ghost artist
was…not for a couple of months, anyway!)"

"These are some shots of the cop facilities. Well, what I could get
anyway. The 20th SPG sign that used to be on the side of the LE Desk
is now sitting in a hallway inside. I had put the award wall together
at Col. Daisley's request in '91 and redid the base relief shield
across from the LE Desk. That side of the building isn't used anymore
and in a great state of disrepair, unfortunately. I don't remember who
did the montage on the wall but always admired it, hence the picture.
I didn't get any pictures of RAF Bicester but did drive past. A lot of
the buildings have been refurbished and are again in use, although not
by the USAF."

HISTORY OF THE AIR POLICE & SECURITY POLICE BADGE
When the Air Force separated for the Army in 1947, its police--still
called Military Police--continued to wear the old MP brassard, or armband,
even after the name changed to Air Police in November 1948, but a new
brassard gradually replaced the older one. For several reasons, many in
the career field did not esteem the brassard; it wrinkled, slipped down
on the sleeve, and twisted to hide the letters. Since Officers of the
Day, Airdrome Officers, and other "temporaries" wore similar brassards,
the Air Police repeatedly requested a shield to replace the brassard and
to underscore their permanency.
In their enthusiasm for the idea of a shield, some persons had unofficial
ones made and presumably wore them, against regulations. Many examples of
these may be found in private collections and at the Security Police
Museum at Lackland AFB, TX. We do not always know when and where they
were produced nor when and where they were worn, if ever. Nevertheless,
the desire to replace the brassard with a shield grew within the career
field and finally produced official action.
In Oct 1956, the Air Provost Marshal, HQ/USAF requested and received
permission to design and field test a shield. By May 1957 this process
was completed and units in three MAJCOMS (MATS, SAC, and USAFE) received
400 prototype shields for 60- to 90-day trials. These shields resembled
the ones worn today except that they were silver-plated, had blue and
white inlays in the Air Force crest, and "Air Police" in the banner under
the eagle's talons. Also, the shield was attached to the uniform by three
pins and held there by clasps. Unfortunately, the color inlays often
chipped and broke out of the crest, which marred the appearance, while the
pins bent and broke off. In February 1959, the Air Police badge was
redesigned, eliminating the inlays and the pins were replaced by a safety
clasp similar to civilian police badges, the shields were mass produced
and distribution began to the units in the field. Until 1960, when the
last units received their shields, AP units continued to wear brassards.
The Air Police became the Security Police in November 1966 and a new
shield had to be designed and manufactured. Presumably to reduce costs,
they were made of base silver-colored metal without silver-plating, the
new shield resembled the old superficially, but the new banner inscription
read "Security Police." During the transition period, however, many
continued to wear Air Police shields until the new version finally replaced
them by the fall of 1968. The Security Police became the Security Forces

Safety at Georgetown University; The Chief Of Police af Crofton, Maryland;

Major, USAF Retired

Part One:
"I was stationed at Upper Heyford in the middle 1950s with
the Air Police Squadron. Some of the officers were Major
Alva Murray, Captain Jay Quick, Lt. William Luckett, myself
Lt. Fitzhugh L. Whitfield, Lt. Bob Stoller, Lt Dave Wells
and Lt. Lyman King. I was stationed there when I met my
wife to be. She is from Scarborough, Yorkshire and we will
soon celebrate our 48th Wedding Anniversary. If you know
where any of the fellows listed above, would love to know
their whereabouts. We were a SAC Installation at the time.
Fitzhugh L. Whitfield
USAF Retired since 1967
Part Two:
"I was part of the Air Police Squadron and was always
assigned to the flight line security. We supported B-47s
that operated out of the states. We use to get Air Police
reinforcements from various bases in the U. S. for a thirty
day or maybe 60 day rotations. Our permanent party enlisted
personnel had to go into the barracks and make up beds in a
military form so that the TDY Air Police personnel would not
have to make up their beds and could get rest as soon as
possible after landing. The permanent party people resented
having to do that. One TDY group arrived with freshly made
beds and prepared for bed and sleep quickly after landing.
We found out that our permanent party people had short
sheeted all the beds. Of course there was a half assed
attempt to find the guilty but it was impossible to do so.
The officers and non-coms had a good laugh about this
incident.
I also remember that our Base Adjutant was Major John Gottee.
He was assigned duty as a summary court marial officer to try
one of the prisoners. Major Gottee used the back cell of
the jail part to conduct the trial. When he found the
airman guilty and sentenced him, he informed the airman that
he could leave. The airman closed the cell door and locked
it. Major Gottee was locked in that cell for a pretty good
time because no one could hear him as that portion of the
jail was not a well traveled area. The people that knew
about the incident got a good laugh about it.
One of the photos that you have on the web site is the
entrance to the base. One of Major Millers airman came off
the main road drunk with the driver side door not secured
and as he turned right into the entrance, the door flew open
and out slid the airman onto the concrete. The vehicle
continued to travel for another fifty yards or so before
hitting something and coming to a stop. The driver was not
injured just a few scratches."

20th Security Police Squadron
Nov 1976 - Nov 1978
I believe there are many stories and experiences yet untold about life on base
and about working on the Flightline. As a Security Policeman assigned to
aircraft security in the mid 1970's, we would hear about and respond to
in-flight emergencies of F-111's on approach. On these rare occasions, the SP's
were sent to stop USAF traffic at both vehicle crossovers near each end of the
runway. This also gave us a front row seat to watch the outcome of the
emergency-stricken aircraft touching down. One such instance occurred as an
in-bound F-111 reported no control on the aircraft flaps. No one knew what to
expect as far as how much control the pilot would have over the "Bird"
(as we used to call them) during the attempt to land. Consequently, the
aircraft came in with its nose up a little steep, and as it touched down on the
runway, the arrestor hook on the rear of the airplane scrapped the runway
surface, sending a 20-30 foot high rooster-tail of sparks into the air. The
aircraft rolled for quite a distance on its two rear wheels before the nose
wheel finally touched down on the runway. No one was hurt but the incident
made for quite a show.

Duane,
I've included pictures of a SP T-shirt, that I believe was done in
1979. If I remember correctly, I believe Brian Lambert (A-flight) was behind
the making of the shirt. I thought you might enjoy seeing it, as a former SP.
