The 1950's

Submitted by Jay N. Schwarz, 1st AFDS, 1951.

"I found this one from 1950, and plugged in the names that my father
(Lt Col Gil Davis SR.) was able to recall, with what other info he had. It
was his graduating class before they were shipped out to England."

"Our squadron, 1st Aviation Field Depot Squadron, arrived at Upper Heyford
in May of 1951. At that time, there were no fences, and the weeds were 3 feet
high. Attached is a photo of part of the RAF Station."
Submitted by Doug Lemmen, 1st Aviation Field Depot Squadron, 1951, through
Jim and Gail Seymour, 3918th Air Base Squadron (SAC), 3918th Transportation
Squadron (SAC), 1959 - 1963.

"My father (listed on the Duty Roster) is Gilbert
Davis, LT. Col, (ret). Here's a photo of my dad, taken in
Oxford (where the family lived, and where I was born) while
stationed at UH. He's sitting on his BSA Ariel he was
driving at the time (1952), a single cylinder British
Thumper. The other shot was taken in Albuquerque New Mexico,
where dad lives. My brother bought a restored BSA Ariel
(identical motorcycle) and snapped the second photo of my
dad, 51 years later."

Notes and Quotes

"I was stationed at "Upper Haystack" when it reopened after WWII in 1951.
I was in the 1st AFDS at Heyford from 1951-54 and we provided support to
B-50's, B-47's, (F-84's and B-36's rarely). Our squadron arrived in the
UK in 1951 and while the runways were being lengthened, spent that winter
up at Schulthorpe."
